Parliament
The Parliament of England was, and still currently is, the legislature that makes laws in the Kingdom of England. The basis of Parliament was originally created in the Magna Carta and was given the power to help limit the power of the King. Over centuries, the English Parliament progressively limited the power of the English monarchy. At first, Parliament was only made up of Nobles, but, by the 1700s, it had a house that was elected by the people of England. Since Parliament was responsible for paying England's bills, it had the power to raise and lower taxes on all Englishmen. Therefore, Parliament raised the taxes in the American Colonies in order to pay off the debt from the French and Indian War. Today Parliament in England is the same except the Parliament in Ireland was abolished in 1801, so its former members were merged into what is now called The Parliament of the United Kingdom.
